Year 9 are currently looking at the world after the First World War. As part of that we have defined democracy and dictatorship. In this lesson, we will look at communism and whether it was a good idea.

In Year 9 we are studying what it means to live in a democracy or a dictatorship. We are also looking at the ideas of communism and considering whether it offered a good system of government. If you would like another copy of the homework sheet from this lesson then it can be downloaded here.
If you want to find out more about communism and the Russian Revolution then it would be worth visiting the school library. One of the classic books to read about the problems of communism, is George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’. This popular book tells the story of a farm run by the animals, and highlights many of the criticisms of Stalin’s Russia. The library also contains a range of non-fiction books about communism.
The ‘spartacus’ website also has interesting and very detailed biographies about Stalin and Lenin.
