Naughty Nuns and Malevolent Monks?

Year 7 have been investigating the Tudors and the different interpretations of them. Recently we have looked at Henry VIII and why people tend to remember the fat, angry Henry. If you want to watch the Horrible Histories song that we watched you can see it here. As part of our investigation we have also looked at Henry closing the monasteries. Your homework is to write an imaginary report from one of the investigators that Thomas Cromwell sent out: Write 1 or 2 paragraphs from a report on a monastery. It must include evidence of rules being broken, but must be appropriate for school – nothing that would embarrass your mum! It should include lively interesting description. It could include evidence that the report was not completely fair. You could start it with: Yesterday I visited Eynsham Abbey. When I arrived… Here are some of the rules that the monks had to follow: 
You can do this homework without knowing anything more about Eynsham Abbey. However, if you would like to find out more you could look at this very detailed website. Or there is a short walk that you can actually do in Eynsham.
Were the peasants revolting?

Year 7 are currently looking at the Peasants’ Revolt. In lessons we have started to think about the causes of the revolt. If you want to re-cap the causes, you can do so with this online card sort. You could try to re-sort the causes with some of the different headings we came up with in class.
In our next couple of lessons we are going to consider the strengths and weaknesses of eye witness accounts. We will also try to piece together what actually happened when the peasants went to London. For another copy of the enrichment homework on the Peasants’ Revolt then click here. Remember this should be a creative piece of work, and you can work in pairs.
Year 7 Castles Competition

Yes Year 7, the moment has finally arrived when you can start building your medieval castles! For detailed instructions about how you can take part in this House competition then download the instructions sheet from lesson. Remember that all entries will earn house points, and there will be prizes for the best castles. Don’t forget, if you are not able to make a medieval castle you could always draw and label one instead.
A good way to make an impressive castle is to label how it changed over time. This website has some good information and pictures that explain these changes. And if that is too much, then how about trying to dress the knight?
The BBC has a very detailed set of instructions about how to build a model Motte and Bailey castle. This is well worth a look as, it also includes a really nice diagram of a motte and bailey castle. The BBC also have this funny little video about life for the Normans:
You can even explore the famous castle at Bamburgh on google maps (just use your cursor keys to move around the castle):
Year 8 Assessment
Feb 11th
Year 8 are currently writing their assessed essays on ‘how hard was life for children in the mills?’ You now need to write up and improve your work for next lesson. The instructions are available for download. Don’t forget to tick off all the ‘good answers will’ ideas before handing in your work.
I have also put some of the sources from the lesson here. This is to go with your table of notes and spider diagram from class. Finally, Don’t forget that a good way to produce a good piece of work is to include information about Robert Owen (see this post).
